With every new report of a breach in customers’ Personally Identifiable Information (PII), organizations must reevaluate these questions. Organizations must consider the risk to their reputation associated with securing, or failing to secure, customers’ PII. A leading research firm in the information management space recently conducted a national survey to assess the negative reputation impact and customers’ level of concern at receiving data breach notifications. The survey noted of the respondents who received breach notifications:
- Nearly 20% terminated their relationship with the organization; and
- An additional 40% considered taking their business elsewhere.
Organizations are being held to higher customer expectations with respect to taking measures to adequately secure their PII. Legislation has mirrored these concerns – thirty-five states have enacted legislation requiring organizations to disclose security breaches, with several other pending state and federal legislation efforts underway.
Edgewater Technology has developed a methodology to inventory, identify and evaluate the control structure your organization has developed to safeguard PII. We can assist your organization with minimizing the possibility of a breach in customer PII and the risk of losing customers.
