North Shore Medical Center’s (NSMC) Board of Trustees is pleased to welcome two new trustees; Shirley Singleton, chairman, president and CEO of Edgewater Technology (NASDAQ: EDGW) headquartered in Wakefield, and Marc S. Rubin, M.D., chair of surgery at North Shore Medical Center.
After graduating from Northeastern University with a degree in education, Ms. Singleton’s working life began as a high school teacher and coach. After losing her job to budget cuts, she successfully transitioned to a new career in computer programming. Ten years later, in 1992, she co-founded Edgewater Technology.
Since its inception, Edgewater has grown from a privately-held, five-person shop into a multi-million dollar, publicly-traded technology management consulting firm with consultants working across the globe.
Ms. Singleton has been presented with numerous awards and recognitions. Most recently, Endicott College in Beverly, MA awarded her an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Her company has been recognized by the Commonwealth Institute as one of the Top 100 Woman-Led Businesses in Massachusetts for nine consecutive years, and Boston Magazine recognized her as one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the Boston area.
Along with joining the Board of Trustees at NSMC, Ms. Singleton serves on the Foundation Board for Bunker Hill Community College; the board for The Commonwealth Institute; and the Dean's Advisory Council for Bentley College. In addition, she is a member of the Town of Essex Conservation Commission.
After graduating Williams College and The College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, Dr. Rubin completed his surgical residency at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital and his colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Lahey Clinic.
Dr. Rubin was named Chair of the Department of Surgery at North Shore Medical Center in 2005, and has practiced colon and rectal surgery at NSMC since 1993. He is also a clinical instructor in surgery at Harvard Medical School and is president of Surgical Specialists of the North Shore, a large multispecialty surgical group. At NSMC, Dr. Rubin has developed an array of innovative safety and quality programs and is a member of both the Patient Care Assessment Committee and the Quality and Professional Affairs Committee.
Along with his new role at NSMC, he is also a member of the Board of Directors of North Shore Health System since 2006 and sits on the quality and safety committee of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is a member of the quality and patient safety division of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine and is both the current President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and a Governor of the American College of Surgeons.
